Set
in the heart of the English Peak District, Buxton owes much
to its history as a fashionable spa in the 18th and 19th centuries and to the investments of the
Dukes of Devonshire. Today, as a major visitor destination,
it attracts well over a million visitors a year, who come
to enjoy its fine architecture, parks, gardens and natural
attractions, cultural and music events, accommodation and
conference facilities, its market and its range of national
chain stores and independent shops.
The
town is also the source of Buxton Mineral Water and hosts
the International Opera and Gilbert and Sullivan Festivals.
Already the main centre for accommodation in the Peak District
(making it an idea base for exploring the surrounding area),
Buxton is also within easy reach of the cities of Manchester,
Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby.
Retailers,
accommodation and entertainment providers, local amenity groups
and the local Council jointly promote the town under the umbrella
of the Brighter Buxton Partnership. The partnership works
together to encourage investment in the town, bringing in
almost £10 million over the last decade. Brighter Buxton has
also produced a Town Guide and a Business Plan for 2000-2003.
